The Mid-Atlantic Simulation of the United Nations (MASUN) is the pride and joy of George Mason Model UN. Every spring, we host more than 200 high school students to discuss the pressing international policy issues of the day. Students become fully engaged representing various countries and individuals, immersing themselves in the international policy arena.

Dear Model UN sponsor,
We welcome you to the 17th Mid-Atlantic Simulation of the United Nations conference, being held March 7-8, 2008 – Friday and Saturday – on the Fairfax campus of George Mason University. As Secretary-General, I hope that you will enjoy our shorter two-day format and our exciting committee lineup. We will offer six committees this year: at the novice level, the UN General Assembly 1st Committee (DISEC); at the intermediate level, the Assembly of the African Union; at the advanced level, the 2008 Presidential Election as two real-time “crisis” committees, the Democratic and Republican candidates’ respective campaign staff; the Secretary-General’s cabinet (as the “good offices”) in a real-time crisis simulation; and the historical simulation of Alexander the Great’s War Cabinet.
Registration is open now at http://register.gmumun.org. The school fee is $30 during priority registration and $40 during regular registration; the delegate fee is $30 during priority and $35 during regular registration. To be eligible for priority registration, the school fee must be received by December 20, 2007; priority registration ensures that you receive more of your top assignment requests. Priority registration closes on December 20 and regular registration closes on February 29. Assignments will be released starting February 4, once your school fee has been received.
For the past three months, I have worked with the new secretariat of the George Mason University Model United Nations Association to make much-needed changes to our annual high school MUN conference. We agreed to a shorter, two-day conference schedule that will have a minimal impact on the total number of hours spent in committee. Our procedures regarding how we select and train staff have been changed, and we have conveyed to senior staff the importance of interacting with you, the sponsor, during the conference to quickly address issues as they arise. I am committed to working with sponsors and delegates to ensure that MASUN XVII is an exciting, memorable, and insightful experience.
Thank you for your support of Model United Nations, and I look forward to seeing your school this March!
